Siddaramaiah Calls for Unity on Cauvery Issue

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said the state has a political tradition of putting aside party differences when matters concerning Karnataka’s interests are at stake. His remarks came after an all-party meeting convened to discuss the ongoing Cauvery water issue.

Siddaramaiah said leaders across political parties should work together on issues affecting the state rather than allowing political differences to come in the way of Karnataka’s interests. He emphasised that the Cauvery dispute is a sensitive matter that requires a united approach from the state’s political leadership. The meeting brought together representatives of the ruling Congress and opposition parties to deliberate on the situation surrounding the sharing and management of Cauvery river waters. The dispute has historically involved Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and has frequently led to political and public tensions in both states.

Speaking after the meeting, Siddaramaiah highlighted Karnataka’s longstanding political practice of maintaining unity on major issues involving the state. He said such unity strengthens Karnataka’s position when the state takes up matters with the Centre and other stakeholders.

The Chief Minister’s comments come as the Cauvery issue remains politically sensitive, particularly because water availability is closely linked to agriculture, drinking-water requirements and the needs of Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka.

The state government has maintained that Karnataka’s water requirements must be protected while also complying with decisions and directions issued by the appropriate authorities. Opposition parties, meanwhile, have been demanding that the government take a firm stand to safeguard the state’s interests.

The all-party meeting was therefore seen as an attempt to build political consensus before Karnataka proceeds with its next steps on the issue. Leaders discussed the state’s position and the need for coordination among political parties.

Siddaramaiah said Karnataka should speak with one voice on matters affecting its people. He stressed that political differences are natural in a democracy, but issues involving the state’s interests should be treated separately from party politics. The Cauvery dispute has remained one of South India’s most contentious inter-state water-sharing issues for decades. Decisions regarding the river’s waters are governed by a combination of legal judgments, tribunal orders and mechanisms established by the Union government.

With the latest all-party discussions, the Karnataka government is seeking to project a united political position as it continues negotiations and legal and administrative efforts over the Cauvery issue. The Chief Minister’s appeal for political unity is expected to remain central to Karnataka’s approach as the water dispute develops.
