A Special Investigation Team has been constituted in Madhya Pradesh to investigate allegations of dowry death against a retired judge and his lawyer son following the death of a woman under suspicious circumstances.
Police officials said the SIT was formed after the victim’s family accused her husband and in-laws of prolonged harassment over dowry demands. The woman reportedly died within a few years of marriage, prompting serious allegations against the family, including claims of mental and physical torture.
According to investigators, the victim’s relatives alleged that repeated complaints of harassment were ignored earlier and demanded an impartial probe due to the influential background of the accused. Following growing public attention and pressure from women’s rights groups, senior police authorities ordered the formation of a specialised investigation team.
Officials stated that the SIT will examine medical records, digital evidence, witness statements and financial transactions connected to the case. Investigators are also expected to question family members, neighbours and others linked to the incident to determine whether there was sustained dowry-related abuse.
Police confirmed that a case has been registered under sections related to dowry death, cruelty and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Dowry Prohibition Act. Authorities said further legal action would depend on the findings of the investigation.
The accused family has denied wrongdoing and maintained that the allegations are false. Legal representatives associated with the family reportedly claimed the woman’s death was being misrepresented and said they would cooperate with investigators.
The case has sparked widespread discussion in legal and social circles because of the involvement of a former judicial officer and a practising advocate. Activists have demanded a transparent investigation free from political or institutional influence.
Senior police officials assured that the probe would be conducted fairly and professionally. The SIT is expected to submit its preliminary findings in the coming weeks as investigators continue gathering evidence in the case.
