Sonam Wangchuk Set for Hospital Discharge as Supreme Court Takes Up Protest Cases

Climate activist and education reform campaigner Sonam Wangchuk is expected to be discharged from a private hospital in Gurugram on Monday, marking another key development in the nationwide movement against alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Following his discharge, Wangchuk is scheduled to visit Rajghat in New Delhi to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi before addressing supporters.
Wangchuk was admitted to hospital after ending a 26-day hunger strike, which he had undertaken in solidarity with students demanding accountability and reforms in the country's examination system. The fast concluded after discussions between protest representatives and government ministers, though Wangchuk stressed that the movement was never about one individual's resignation alone but about ensuring lasting reforms and transparency in public examinations.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear two petitions alleging police excesses during the recent student protests at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The pleas claim that police used disproportionate force against demonstrators protesting alleged paper leaks and seeking reforms in the examination process. Petitioners have sought an independent investigation, preservation of evidence, and action against officials responsible for the alleged use of excessive force.
The hearings come after days of nationwide demonstrations, with student groups and civil society organisations alleging that peaceful protesters were subjected to lathi charges, detentions and restrictions on public assembly. The cases are expected to focus on whether constitutional rights to peaceful protest were violated and whether adequate safeguards were followed during police action.
Although the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP)-led protest has officially concluded, student organisations have indicated that their campaign for comprehensive examination reforms will continue. The Centre has already announced plans to strengthen anti-paper leak laws and improve the integrity of public examinations, but protesters maintain that institutional accountability and systemic reforms remain essential to restoring public confidence.
