Ghaziabad: A Home Guard jawan was killed and a police constable was seriously injured after a speeding Mahindra Thar allegedly rammed their motorcycle in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday. The accident took place on Wednesday evening near Baharampur in the Crossing Republic police station area. The two personnel were travelling towards Gaur City-2 in Greater Noida West after receiving information about an incident there.
According to Ghaziabad Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Dhawal Jaiswal, Constable Praveen Kumar and Home Guard jawan Kapil Kumar were on a police motorcycle when a red Thar allegedly being driven rashly and negligently crashed into them near the Baharampur police outpost. The impact left both personnel with serious injuries. They were immediately rushed to SJM Hospital for treatment. Kapil Kumar, however, succumbed to his injuries late Wednesday night while undergoing treatment. Constable Praveen Kumar continues to receive medical attention.
Police have registered a case at the Crossing Republic police station based on a complaint filed by Praveen Kumar. Investigators are now working to trace and identify the driver of the Thar.
Officials said the vehicle's registration number has provided an important lead in the investigation. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision and are trying to establish how fast the SUV was travelling before the crash.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety and reckless driving, particularly in busy urban areas where police and emergency personnel frequently travel while responding to calls.
The two personnel were reportedly heading to Greater Noida West in connection with an official assignment when the accident occurred. The death of Kapil Kumar has led to concern among his colleagues and the Home Guard department.
Police said further action would be taken after the investigation establishes the circumstances of the accident and identifies the driver responsible.
Authorities are also expected to examine CCTV footage and other available evidence from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events. The incident comes as another reminder of the risks faced by police and Home Guard personnel while carrying out duties on busy roads. The investigation into the fatal collision is currently underway.
