Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy summer rain accompanied by strong winds has caused widespread disruption across several parts of Kerala, damaging houses, uprooting trees, and affecting normal life in multiple districts.
According to officials and disaster management reports, the sudden spell of intense pre-monsoon rain triggered damage mainly in coastal and high-range regions. Gusty winds brought down trees and electric poles, leading to power outages and traffic disruptions in many areas.
In Thiruvananthapuram district, coastal erosion was reported from low-lying regions, where rough sea conditions damaged roads and partially affected residential areas. Authorities have been closely monitoring vulnerable coastal stretches due to continued rough weather conditions.
In central Kerala, Ernakulam district witnessed significant damage, with around 10 houses partially affected across different taluks including Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha, Kochi city limits, and Tripunithura. Several incidents of tree fall were also reported, including damage to parked vehicles. Fire and rescue teams were deployed to clear blocked roads and restore normal movement.
In Kozhikode, strong winds and sudden heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in several towns, with reports of damaged houses and disrupted road traffic. In some areas, uprooted trees blocked highways and caused temporary congestion, affecting daily movement of people.
Meteorological officials have indicated that the current weather pattern is linked to pre-monsoon atmospheric activity, which often brings thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Kerala during this period. The India Meteorological Department has also warned that similar conditions may continue in the coming days, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in several districts.
Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, avoid travel during thunderstorms, and stay away from weak structures, trees, and power lines during strong winds.
With weather conditions remaining unstable, disaster response teams are on alert across the state to handle emergencies and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
