West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is expected to meet a group of rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) Members of Parliament in New Delhi on Sunday, June 14, ahead of their scheduled meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday. The development comes amid an escalating political crisis within the TMC, with dissident MPs seeking recognition as the “real Trinamool” faction in Parliament.
According to rebel TMC MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia, around 19 MPs are expected to participate in the discussions. Basunia stated that all rebel lawmakers would gather in Delhi on Sunday for a meeting with Adhikari before approaching the Speaker the following day. The dissident group claims to have sufficient support to stake its claim as a separate parliamentary bloc and has reportedly indicated support for the BJP-led NDA at the national level.
The planned meeting is being viewed as a significant moment in the ongoing turmoil within the TMC. Rebel MPs have already sought separate seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha and are preparing to formally present their case before the Speaker. Their move follows weeks of speculation about divisions within the party after the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
The rebellion has triggered a sharp response from the TMC leadership. Senior party leaders have accused the dissidents of attempting to weaken the organization and have questioned the legal basis of their claim. TMC MP Mahua Moitra argued that the Constitution does not permit a simple parliamentary split and said any lawmakers wishing to align with another party should resign and seek a fresh mandate from voters.
Political observers believe the outcome of Monday’s meeting with the Speaker could have major implications for opposition politics in West Bengal and for the TMC’s strength in Parliament. The situation has intensified the ongoing “real versus fake TMC” battle, with both sides claiming legitimacy and support among elected representatives.
The proposed Delhi meeting between Adhikari and the rebel MPs is therefore being closely watched as a potential turning point in one of the most significant political realignments in West Bengal in recent years.
