Varanasi: Spiritual leader Swami Avimukteshwaranand has made a strong statement responding to a recent public appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that the government should begin austerity measures by addressing high-value defence and administrative expenditures, including the reported ₹8,000 crore aircraft procurement.
Speaking during a public interaction, Swami Avimukteshwaranand said that while citizens are often urged to adopt financial discipline and support national development through sacrifices, the same principle should first be reflected in government spending priorities.
He specifically referred to the purchase and maintenance of high-cost aircraft, estimated to be worth around ₹8,000 crore, and said that such expenditures should be reconsidered in the broader context of economic responsibility and public welfare. According to him, “austerity must begin at home,” implying that the state should lead by example before asking the public to tighten spending.
His remarks come in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal urging citizens and institutions to contribute towards national development, economic resilience, and responsible consumption. The Prime Minister has, on multiple occasions, emphasized reducing wasteful expenditure and promoting efficient use of resources.
Swami Avimukteshwaranand, however, argued that public trust in such appeals depends on visible restraint at the highest levels of governance. He said that when large-scale government expenditures are announced, it becomes necessary to evaluate whether those resources could be redirected towards education, healthcare, or rural development.
The statement has sparked discussion in political and social circles, with supporters of the spiritual leader welcoming his call for fiscal discipline, while others argue that defence and strategic procurement decisions are based on national security requirements and long-term planning.
Government sources have not officially responded to the remarks. However, officials familiar with defence procurement processes noted that aircraft acquisitions are typically part of long-term strategic agreements and are essential for maintaining operational readiness.
Meanwhile, the comments have added to ongoing debates around government spending priorities and fiscal responsibility. Analysts say such interventions by prominent religious figures often influence public discourse, especially when they intersect with economic and national policy issues.
As discussions continue, the statement has once again brought attention to the broader question of balancing development goals, security needs, and austerity measures in public governance.
