Political tempers flared in West Bengal’s Baharampur after senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury visited the area to confront what his party described as a brutal incident of alleged violence involving Trinamool Congress workers.
The controversy erupted following claims that Congress supporters were “violated and beaten” in parts of Berhampore, triggering outrage within the party ranks. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a prominent face of the Congress in Bengal, reached the spot and interacted with the alleged victims, demanding swift justice and strict action against those responsible.
According to Congress leaders, the violence was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of intimidation ahead of the ongoing political activities in the region. Chowdhury strongly condemned the alleged attack, accusing the ruling All India Trinamool Congress of fostering a climate of fear and suppressing opposition voices.
At the centre of the controversy is Papai Ghosh, whom the Congress has directly accused of being involved in the incident. The party has demanded his immediate arrest, alleging that he played a key role in orchestrating the violence. Chowdhury warned that failure to act could lead to larger protests, as local Congress workers gathered in significant numbers, raising slogans and calling for justice.
On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress has rejected the allegations, terming them politically motivated. Party leaders argued that such claims are often made during election periods to gain public sympathy and tarnish the image of the ruling establishment.
The incident has further intensified the already heated political atmosphere in Murshidabad district, particularly in Baharampur, which remains a stronghold of Congress influence in the state. With elections approaching, both sides appear unwilling to back down, turning the region into a flashpoint of political confrontation.
Meanwhile, police have increased their presence in sensitive areas to prevent any escalation. Officials stated that an investigation is underway and assured that appropriate action will be taken based on evidence.
As the war of words continues, the situation in Baharampur reflects the broader pattern of high-stakes, high-tension politics playing out across West Bengal, where allegations of violence and counter-allegations have become a recurring feature of the electoral landscape.
