Three bodies have been recovered after four youths drowned in the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) in Telangana's Nizamabad district, while an intensive search operation is continuing to locate the fourth victim. The tragic incident occurred after the group entered the project's backwaters, prompting a large-scale rescue effort involving police, fire services, disaster response teams and local swimmers.
According to Nizamabad Police, the youths had ventured into the SRSP area when the accident took place. Rescue teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information and launched an operation to trace the missing individuals. By Tuesday morning, authorities had recovered three bodies, while efforts to find the fourth youth were still underway.
Earlier reports indicated that the group had visited the project for a leisure outing. Police said one of the youths reportedly slipped into deep water, and the others entered the water in an attempt to rescue him. As none of them knew how to swim, all four were swept away by the strong currents. The search operation, which was briefly suspended due to darkness, resumed with the support of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, firefighters and expert local swimmers.
Police said the recovered bodies have been shifted for post-mortem examination. Three of the victims were residents of Arshapalli in Nizamabad district, while the fourth youth is from Hyderabad, according to the latest official information. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and have appealed to the public to stay away from canals, reservoirs and other water bodies during the monsoon season, when water levels and currents remain unpredictable.
Senior police officials monitored the rescue operation at the site and assured that every effort is being made to locate the missing youth. The tragedy has cast a shadow over the local community, with residents expressing grief over the loss of the young lives. Officials have reiterated the importance of exercising caution near reservoirs and avoiding swimming in unfamiliar or unsafe waters, especially during the rainy season.
