Three police personnel, including a police station officer-in-charge, have been suspended in Jharkhand's Ranchi district after a 44-year-old man allegedly died by suicide and left behind a note accusing police officials of harassment.
The deceased, identified as Pradhan Yadav, was a resident of the DT Khatal area under the jurisdiction of Dhurwa police station. According to police officials, Yadav allegedly hanged himself on Monday and left behind a five-page suicide note in which he blamed local police personnel for mentally harassing him and pressuring him in connection with a dispute case.
Police said Yadav had approached Dhurwa police station on June 5 after allegedly being assaulted by some neighbours during a dispute. However, instead of receiving justice, he claimed in the note that investigating officials repeatedly pressured him to settle the matter rather than taking action against the accused. The note reportedly named investigating officer Lal Mohan Pandey and another police personnel, Jitendra Tudu, among those responsible for the alleged harassment.
Following the incident, Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Ranjan ordered immediate action. Dhurwa police station officer-in-charge Arun Kumar Mahatha, investigating officer Lal Mohan Pandey and police personnel Jitendra Tudu were suspended pending an inquiry.
The SSP also constituted a special investigation team led by the Hatia Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to conduct a detailed probe into the allegations and circumstances surrounding Yadav's death. Authorities have stated that further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The case has triggered concern over alleged police misconduct and the treatment of complainants seeking assistance from law enforcement agencies. Local residents and civil society groups have demanded a fair and transparent investigation into the allegations raised in the suicide note.
Officials have urged the public not to jump to conclusions until the inquiry is completed. However, the suspension of three police personnel indicates that the administration is treating the allegations seriously. The investigation team is expected to examine the contents of the suicide note, interactions between the victim and police officials, and whether any procedural lapses occurred during the handling of the case.
