At least three people have lost their lives after lightning strikes and severe thunderstorms hit several parts of Odisha, causing widespread damage to houses, crops, and local infrastructure.
According to early reports from state authorities, the incidents occurred as pre-monsoon weather activity intensified across multiple districts. Strong winds accompanied by lightning struck rural and semi-urban areas, leaving several homes partially damaged and disrupting normal life.
India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall and thunderstorm activity in parts of the state over the coming days, warning residents to remain cautious, especially in open fields and during outdoor work.
Local administration teams have been deployed to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance to affected families. Relief efforts are underway in the worst-hit areas, where damaged houses and fallen trees have been reported.
Officials said most of the fatalities were caused by lightning strikes while people were engaged in outdoor activities during sudden weather changes. Authorities have urged citizens to follow safety advisories, including avoiding shelter under trees during storms and staying indoors during lightning activity.
In addition to the loss of lives, several livestock deaths and crop damages have also been reported, raising concerns among farmers who are already preparing for the upcoming agricultural season.
Emergency services remain on alert as weather conditions are expected to remain unstable. The state government has instructed district administrations to monitor the situation closely and ensure quick response in case of further incidents.
The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and warned of gusty winds in coastal areas. Officials said updates will continue as the weather system develops over the region.
