The distribution of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has begun across West Bengal under heavy security arrangements, marking a crucial step ahead of the first phase of polling in the Assembly elections. Election officials initiated the dispatch process from multiple Distribution-cum-Reception Centres (DCRCs), ensuring that polling materials reach designated booths well in advance.
The Election Commission of India has deployed a multi-layered security system to safeguard the movement of EVMs. Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), along with state police personnel, have been stationed at strong rooms and along transit routes. GPS tracking systems and videography are also being used to monitor the movement of the machines to prevent any untoward incidents.
Officials said polling teams, including presiding officers and polling personnel, have started collecting EVMs and other election materials from the DCRCs. Each team is being briefed about protocols, including handling of machines, mock poll procedures, and adherence to guidelines set by the Election Commission of India.
Special arrangements have been made in sensitive and remote areas, where additional security forces have been deployed. Authorities are also ensuring proper transportation facilities for polling staff, amid earlier complaints from some districts regarding logistical challenges.
The first phase of polling is expected to witness voting across several constituencies, with political parties intensifying their last-minute campaigns. The state administration has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections.
Meanwhile, strong rooms where EVMs will be stored before and after polling are under round-the-clock surveillance, with CCTV cameras and strict access control. Political party representatives are also allowed to keep watch to maintain transparency in the process.
With preparations entering the final stage, officials remain focused on smooth execution, as West Bengal gears up for what is being described as one of the most closely watched electoral battles in recent times.
