Baharampur: The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has alleged that its youth wing office in Baharampur was attacked and vandalised during the vote counting process, intensifying concerns over post-poll violence in West Bengal.
According to the party, the office of its youth unit was targeted by alleged supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on counting day. In a statement shared on social media, the TMC claimed that the premises were “destroyed” and looted, accusing rival party workers of carrying out the attack “without any fear.”
The incident reportedly took place in Baharampur, a politically sensitive region in Murshidabad district, at a time when tensions were already high due to the ongoing counting of votes for the recently concluded Assembly elections. The TMC termed the alleged attack as a serious breakdown of law and order, blaming the BJP for creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
The BJP, however, has not officially responded to the specific allegations at the time of reporting. In previous instances, leaders from the party have denied involvement in similar incidents and, in turn, accused TMC workers of engaging in violence, reflecting the deep political divide between the two sides.
The development comes amid a broader backdrop of clashes and unrest reported from different parts of the state following the election results. Reports of political violence, including vandalism and confrontations between rival party supporters, have surfaced in multiple districts, highlighting the volatile situation on the ground.
Just a day before the counting, clashes were also reported in parts of Howrah, where supporters of both parties were involved in confrontations that led to injuries and police intervention. Law enforcement authorities had to deploy additional forces to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation.
Police officials have said that they are examining available evidence, including local footage and witness accounts, to identify those responsible for the Baharampur incident. Security has been stepped up in several sensitive areas to prevent further violence.
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections have seen a dramatic political shift, with the BJP emerging victorious and ending the TMC’s long rule in the state. However, the aftermath of the results has been marked by allegations and counter-allegations of violence, raising concerns about stability and law and order in the region.
