Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shashi Panja on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing central investigative agencies for political purposes, alleging that they are being used “for every work of the party.”
Addressing the media, Panja claimed that agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are being deployed selectively against opposition leaders, particularly in states where the BJP is not in power. She alleged that this trend reflects a pattern of political vendetta aimed at weakening rival parties ahead of elections.
Panja further said that leaders of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress have repeatedly faced central agency action, which she described as “targeted harassment.” According to her, such actions are intended to create pressure and influence the political landscape in states like West Bengal.
The TMC spokesperson also defended her party’s leadership, asserting that they have nothing to hide and will continue to cooperate with investigations while politically opposing what she termed as the BJP’s “misuse of power.” She emphasized that the people of West Bengal are aware of these developments and would respond through the democratic process.
The BJP, however, has consistently rejected such allegations. Party leaders maintain that central agencies function independently and act based on evidence and legal procedures, not political direction. They argue that investigations are carried out as per the law and that no one is above accountability.
The issue of alleged misuse of central agencies has been a recurring theme in national politics, with several opposition parties raising similar concerns in recent years. It has often led to sharp exchanges between the ruling party at the Centre and regional parties across states.
Political observers note that such allegations tend to intensify during election periods, as parties seek to shape public perception and mobilize support. With campaigning underway in various parts of the country, the war of words between the BJP and opposition parties like the TMC continues to escalate.
As the political battle sharpens, the role and functioning of investigative agencies remain a key point of contention in India’s evolving electoral landscape.
