The Tripura government has decided to bar doctors and faculty members of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital from private practice to strengthen public healthcare.
Chief Minister Manik Saha said the move will apply only to the state’s premier hospital and medical college. In return, doctors will receive a 20% Non-Practising Allowance on their basic pay.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said the decision was taken after consultations with doctors’ associations and AGMC faculty representatives. The government also cited recommendations from AIIMS New Delhi, which has been working with Tripura to upgrade AGMC and GBP Hospital as a Centre of Excellence.
Officials said the ban is aimed at ensuring doctors devote more time to teaching, research and patient care inside government institutions. The state also plans to expand PG seats, introduce more super-specialty services and improve facilities at GBP Hospital.
The government said similar restrictions already exist in several states and premier medical institutions. The order is expected to come into effect after official notification.
