Amid intense political developments in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Kamraj on Friday expressed strong confidence that the party would soon secure a full majority and form the next government under party chief Vijay.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Kamraj said, “TVK is going to gain the full majority. There is no doubt that Vijay’s government will be formed in Tamil Nadu.” His remarks came as the actor-turned-politician Vijay continued efforts to gather support after his party emerged as the single-largest force in the Assembly.
TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly in its electoral debut, falling short of the majority mark of 118. However, the party has received support from several opposition and smaller parties, including Congress, which extended backing shortly after the results were declared.
According to recent reports, TVK’s numbers have now crossed the majority mark with the support of Congress, VCK, IUML and Left allies, taking the alliance tally to around 120 seats. The development has significantly strengthened Vijay’s claim to form the government.
The political situation in the state became tense after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly sought proof of majority support from TVK before inviting the party to form the government. Vijay met the Governor multiple times over the past two days to stake claim. Raj Bhavan maintained that the constitutional requirement of majority support had to be clearly established before proceeding further.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders and several opposition parties criticised the Governor’s stance, alleging unnecessary delay in inviting the single-largest party. They argued that democratic norms require the Governor to first invite the leading party and allow it to prove majority on the Assembly floor.
Kamraj, however, dismissed all uncertainty and claimed that public support was firmly behind Vijay. He said people in Tamil Nadu had voted for political change and expressed confidence that the formation of a TVK-led government was only a matter of time.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu election has already marked a historic shift in the state’s political landscape, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s rapid rise from cinema to politics has become one of the biggest talking points in Indian politics this year.
