Tamil Nadu’s newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government presented its maiden state Budget on Wednesday, August 5, marking a major political and administrative test for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s government. Finance Minister N Marie Wilson tabled the 2026-27 Budget in the Assembly as the ruling party sought to showcase its priorities on welfare, education, infrastructure and economic growth.

The Budget was presented against the backdrop of an intense political confrontation between the TVK government and the Opposition DMK. The Assembly session comes just a day after DMK Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was questioned by police and later released on station bail in connection with alleged objectionable remarks. DMK leaders have accused the government of using the case for political purposes, while the ruling side has rejected the allegations.

The political tension has added significance to the Budget session, with reports that Opposition MLAs could protest or walk out over Udhayanidhi’s arrest. The developments have ensured that the first Budget of the Vijay-led administration is being watched not only for its financial proposals but also for how the new government handles its first major confrontation with the Opposition.

The government has sought to present the Budget as a roadmap for long-term development. Among its key priorities is a target of building Tamil Nadu into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. The Budget also focuses on infrastructure, education, youth welfare and technology-driven governance.

Education received significant attention, with ₹44,527 crore allocated to school education. The government also announced free laptops for students, bicycles and other support measures aimed at improving access to education. A separate allocation of ₹2,000 crore has been announced for free laptops.

The Budget also includes major welfare measures. A new scheme will provide eligible women with an eight-gram gold coin and a silk saree for weddings. The government has earmarked ₹812 crore for the scheme.

Infrastructure is another major focus, with ₹21,524 crore allocated for highways and road development. The government has also announced a Safe Roads Mission and plans to use technology to improve road safety and public services.

The Budget therefore marks an important beginning for the TVK government. But with political tensions already high, Vijay’s administration will face close scrutiny from the DMK over both its financial promises and its handling of governance. The coming Assembly debates are expected to provide the first major test of the government’s political strength and ability to deliver on its ambitious promises.
