A court in Bhopal has sent Samarth Singh, the husband of former actor-model and influencer Twisha Sharma, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the high-profile dowry death case. His mother, former district judge Giribala Singh, who is also an accused in the case, has been remanded to judicial custody for the same period.
The order was passed on Tuesday after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) produced both accused before a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court following the completion of their five-day custodial interrogation. Since the CBI did not seek an extension of remand, the court directed that the mother-son duo be lodged in Bhopal Central Jail until June 16.
Twisha Sharma, 33, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12. Her family subsequently alleged that she had been subjected to dowry-related harassment, mental torture and domestic violence by her husband and in-laws. An FIR was registered under provisions related to dowry death, cruelty and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
During the hearing, the CBI informed the court that a substantial part of the investigation is still pending. The agency said statements of several witnesses are yet to be recorded, while forensic reports from seized electronic devices and findings from a second post-mortem examination are still awaited. Investigators also indicated that they may seek fresh custody of the accused if required for further questioning.
The case has drawn nationwide attention because one of the accused, Giribala Singh, is a retired judge. Her legal team raised concerns about the safety of both accused inside Bhopal Central Jail, arguing that some inmates may have previously appeared before courts where Giribala served as a judge. Taking note of these concerns, the court directed jail authorities to provide adequate security and keep them separate from other prisoners.
The CBI recently conducted a reconstruction of the events surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death at her residence as part of its ongoing investigation. The agency is examining forensic evidence, digital records and witness testimonies to determine the circumstances leading to her death.
The case remains under active investigation, with further developments expected after forensic and post-mortem reports are submitted to the court.
