A major road accident on the Agra–Lucknow Expressway in Uttar Pradesh claimed at least two lives and left nearly 20 passengers injured after a private bus collided with a tanker and burst into flames, officials said.
The incident took place late on Friday when the speeding bus, travelling from Lucknow towards Agra, reportedly rammed into a stationary or slow-moving tanker on the expressway. The impact of the collision caused a massive fire, quickly engulfing the bus and creating panic among passengers.
According to police and emergency response teams, several passengers managed to escape by breaking windows, while others sustained burn injuries and trauma in the chaos. Fire brigade units and expressway patrol teams rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames after a sustained effort.
Officials confirmed that at least two passengers died on the spot, while the injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The condition of some of the injured is reported to be critical, and doctors are monitoring them closely.
Rescue operations were carried out jointly by local police, the expressway emergency response team, and district administration officials. Traffic movement on the expressway was temporarily halted as vehicles were diverted to ensure safe clearance of the accident site.
Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding and possible negligence may have contributed to the crash, though authorities have not ruled out mechanical failure or visibility issues. A detailed probe has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Senior police officials visited the site and directed teams to ensure proper medical assistance for the injured and to identify the victims. The identities of the deceased are being confirmed, and efforts are underway to inform their families.
The Agra–Lucknow Expressway, one of India’s major high-speed corridors, has witnessed multiple accidents in the past, raising concerns about road safety, speed regulation, and driver fatigue on long-distance routes.
Authorities have once again urged drivers to follow speed limits strictly and maintain safe distances, especially on high-speed highways, to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
