Two people lost their lives and three others were injured after a car plunged into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Friday. The accident occurred near the Jhala area on the Gangotri National Highway, a route frequently used by pilgrims and tourists visiting the Himalayan region.
According to police officials, the vehicle was travelling towards Gangotri when the driver reportedly lost control on a sharp mountain bend. The car veered off the road and fell into a gorge several hundred feet deep. Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving information about the accident.
Rescue teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local administration launched an operation to retrieve the occupants from the damaged vehicle. Two passengers were found dead at the spot, while three others sustained injuries and were rescued from the gorge.
The injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical officials said that while some of the injured suffered multiple fractures and other injuries, they are currently receiving medical care and are reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that difficult terrain, a sharp curve, and possible overspeeding may have contributed to the crash, although officials said the exact cause will be determined after a detailed inquiry.
Road accidents are not uncommon in the mountainous districts of Uttarakhand, where narrow roads, steep valleys, and unpredictable weather often pose challenges for drivers. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety on the state's hilly routes, particularly during the ongoing pilgrimage season when traffic volume increases significantly.
Police have urged motorists travelling in mountainous areas to drive cautiously, follow speed limits, and ensure vehicles are in proper condition before undertaking long journeys. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, and their identities are being verified before being handed over to their families.
The local administration has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured all necessary assistance to those injured in the accident.
