Two Trinamool Congress leaders have approached the Calcutta High Court seeking protection from possible police action in connection with criminal cases registered against them.
According to court sources, the leaders filed separate petitions before the High Court alleging that the cases against them were politically motivated and aimed at harassment. They requested interim protection from arrest and coercive action by the police while the matters remain under investigation.
During the hearing, the petitioners’ lawyers argued that their clients were cooperating with investigators and there was no need for immediate custodial action. They also claimed the complaints were lodged with “malicious intent” following recent political developments in the state.
The state government’s counsel opposed the petitions, stating that the police were carrying out investigations according to law and that no special protection should be granted at this stage. The court reportedly asked the state to submit details related to the cases and the status of the investigations.
After hearing preliminary arguments, the Calcutta High Court agreed to hear the matter further and fixed the next date for hearing. The court is expected to decide whether interim relief or protection from arrest will be granted to the two leaders.
The development comes amid increasing political tension in West Bengal following multiple investigations and police complaints involving leaders from different political parties. Several opposition parties have accused the administration of using investigative agencies for political purposes, while the ruling side has maintained that legal action is being taken strictly according to evidence and procedure.
