A religious gathering in Maharashtra’s Beed district turned tragic on Wednesday when an overcrowded boat carrying devotees capsized in the Godavari River, leaving two women dead and several others injured. The incident occurred near Purushottampuri in Majalgaon tehsil, where hundreds of devotees had gathered for a temple festival.
According to officials, the accident took place at around 11 a.m. when a boat ferrying devotees across the river lost balance and overturned. Preliminary reports suggest that the vessel was carrying more passengers than its permitted capacity, which may have contributed to the mishap. Witnesses said the boat suddenly tilted before capsizing, throwing dozens of passengers into the water.
Local residents, police personnel, and disaster response teams rushed to the scene and immediately launched rescue operations. Many passengers were pulled out of the river by nearby villagers and emergency responders. However, two women drowned in the accident despite rescue efforts. Another woman was reported to be in critical condition, while several others sustained injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Authorities stated that the boat was transporting devotees visiting a temple located across the river. Due to the religious event, there was a heavy rush of pilgrims throughout the day. Initial investigations indicate that overcrowding and possible instability of the vessel may have played a major role in the accident. Officials are examining whether safety regulations were followed and whether the boat operator had permission to carry the number of passengers on board.
Senior district officials and police officers reached the spot to supervise rescue and recovery operations. The Maharashtra administration has ordered an inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause of the tragedy and identify any lapses in safety procedures. Rescue teams continued to monitor the area to ensure no passengers remained missing.
The accident has once again raised concerns about safety standards on inland waterways, particularly during religious gatherings when passenger numbers often exceed the capacity of small boats. Local residents have demanded stricter enforcement of safety norms, including limits on passenger loads and the mandatory use of life jackets.
As the investigation progresses, authorities have assured that action will be taken against those found responsible for negligence. Meanwhile, the families of the victims are mourning the loss of their loved ones in what was meant to be a day of faith and devotion.
