The United Democratic Front is engaged in intense last-minute discussions to finalise the new Cabinet in Kerala, with senior leaders working to balance regional representation, community equations and coalition interests before the formal government formation process begins.
Top leaders of the Congress-led alliance held multiple meetings in Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi over the past two days as negotiations continued over key ministerial portfolios and representation for smaller alliance partners. Sources within the alliance said the biggest challenge remains accommodating senior leaders while also giving space to younger faces in the new ministry.
The Congress, which leads the UDF alliance in Kerala, is reportedly focusing on maintaining political balance between different districts and communities while ensuring experienced legislators receive major departments. Discussions have also centred around finance, home, health and public works portfolios, which are considered crucial in the new government.
Leaders of the Indian Union Muslim League and Kerala Congress factions are also believed to be seeking important Cabinet positions as part of the final power-sharing arrangement. Alliance leaders have maintained that discussions are progressing positively and that an official announcement is expected soon.
Senior Congress figures indicated that the party leadership wants to avoid public disagreements during the ministry formation process, especially after a closely fought election campaign. Several rounds of internal consultations have therefore been conducted to build consensus among legislators and alliance partners.
Political observers say the composition of the Cabinet will send an important signal about the UDF’s long-term strategy in Kerala politics. Apart from administrative experience, the leadership is also expected to focus on generational transition and organisational unity within the coalition.
The final list of ministers is likely to be submitted to Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar once consultations conclude. Swearing-in arrangements are meanwhile being prepared in the state capital amid heightened political activity.
The UDF’s return to power has generated significant political attention in Kerala, ending years of Left Democratic Front rule and setting the stage for a new phase in the state’s political landscape.
