Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay on Wednesday stirred controversy by alleging an “underground deal” between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the final day of campaigning for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026.
Addressing a charged rally, Vijay claimed that despite publicly opposing each other, both parties were secretly working in coordination for political convenience. “There is an underground understanding between DMK and BJP. People should see through this drama and vote wisely,” he said, urging voters to support what he described as a “genuine alternative.”
The remarks come at a crucial juncture, with campaigning drawing to a close ahead of polling. Vijay, who recently entered active politics with his party TVK, has been positioning himself as a fresh force in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, targeting both the ruling DMK and national parties like the BJP.
Leaders from the DMK strongly rejected the allegation, calling it baseless and politically motivated. Party spokespersons stated that the DMK has consistently opposed the BJP’s ideology and policies, both at the state and national levels. They accused Vijay of making sensational claims to gain attention in his early political journey.
The BJP also dismissed the charge, asserting that there was no question of any understanding with the DMK. Party leaders argued that Vijay’s comments reflected a lack of political experience and were aimed at confusing voters. They reiterated that the BJP remains committed to expanding its presence independently in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay, however, doubled down on his criticism, alleging that voters were being misled by “scripted political narratives.” He emphasised that TVK’s campaign was focused on governance, transparency, and youth empowerment, themes he said were missing from mainstream political discourse.
The final day of campaigning witnessed intense exchanges among parties, with leaders making last-ditch efforts to sway voters. Vijay’s statement has added a fresh layer of controversy, highlighting the increasingly competitive and polarised nature of the election.
Political analysts suggest that while such allegations may energise supporters, their actual impact on voting behaviour remains uncertain. As Tamil Nadu heads to the polls, all eyes will be on whether new entrants like Vijay can translate public attention into electoral gains.
