Actor-turned-politician Vijay, founder and chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), on Thursday urged the Election Commission of India (EC) to extend polling hours in Tamil Nadu till 8 PM, citing inconvenience faced by voters due to heat and long queues at polling booths.
In a formal appeal, Vijay requested the poll panel to consider extending the voting time beyond the scheduled deadline of 6 PM. He pointed out that several voters, particularly daily wage earners and working professionals, were struggling to reach polling stations within the allotted time due to their work commitments and the prevailing hot weather conditions across the state.
The TVK chief said that reports from various constituencies indicated long queues at polling booths even during the final hours of voting. He argued that extending polling by at least two hours would ensure that every willing voter gets a fair opportunity to exercise their democratic right without being turned away due to time constraints.
Vijay also emphasized that higher voter turnout strengthens democracy and reflects the true will of the people. He urged the Election Commission to take a “humane and practical decision” in the interest of voters, especially senior citizens, women, and those coming from remote areas who may face difficulties reaching polling stations on time.
His appeal comes amid an enthusiastic voter response in Tamil Nadu, where polling has been largely peaceful but marked by heavy turnout in several districts. Election officials have reported steady participation since morning, with many polling stations witnessing a surge in voters during the afternoon and early evening hours.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has acknowledged receiving representations from various quarters regarding polling hours but has not yet made any official announcement on extending the voting time. Sources indicated that any such decision would depend on ground assessments, logistical feasibility, and security considerations.
Political observers believe Vijay’s intervention highlights his growing role in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, as he seeks to position himself as a leader attentive to public concerns. His call for extended polling hours has also resonated with sections of voters who faced delays or difficulties in casting their votes.
As polling continues, all eyes are now on the Election Commission’s response. Whether or not the hours are extended, the demand underscores the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in the electoral process, particularly during large-scale democratic exercises like state elections.
