A major industrial accident at the Visakhapatnam (Vizag) Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh has claimed the lives of eight workers and left several others seriously injured, triggering grief across the country and renewed concerns about industrial safety standards. The incident occurred on June 8 inside the plant's Steel Melting Shop, one of the most critical operational sections of the facility.

According to preliminary reports, a ladle carrying molten steel at temperatures estimated to be around 1,600 degrees Celsius malfunctioned during a lifting operation. The massive container either collapsed or suffered a critical failure, causing a large quantity of superheated molten metal to spill across the work area. The spill was followed by a powerful explosion and fire, trapping workers who were on duty nearby.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene immediately after the accident. Several workers sustained severe burn injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Officials confirmed that eight workers lost their lives, while at least six others remain injured, some of them critically. Rescue and recovery operations continued for hours as authorities worked to secure the affected section of the plant.

The tragedy has drawn reactions from top political leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also expressed deep anguish over the incident and directed all concerned departments to coordinate relief and medical assistance for the injured workers and the families of the deceased.

Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy visited the plant soon after the accident, met injured workers undergoing treatment, and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. He assured all possible support from the Ministry of Steel and the plant management to the affected families. The minister also stressed the need for stronger safety measures and strict compliance with operational protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Labour unions and employee representatives have raised questions about workplace safety practices, calling for a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the disaster. Experts say the accident is among the deadliest industrial incidents witnessed at the steel plant in recent years and highlights the risks associated with handling molten metal in heavy industries.

Authorities have launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. The findings are expected to play a crucial role in fixing accountability and strengthening safety mechanisms across India's steel sector.
