A disturbing incident from Maharashtra’s Ulhasnagar has come to light in which a woman was allegedly assaulted and paraded semi-naked with a garland of slippers following a dispute over entry into a temple. Police have arrested two people in connection with the case, officials said on Saturday.
According to preliminary information shared by police, the incident took place after an argument broke out between the woman and a group of locals over a temple-related issue. The dispute reportedly escalated quickly, leading to a violent confrontation in which the woman was allegedly beaten and humiliated in public.
Investigators said the accused allegedly forced the woman to walk through a public area in a semi-naked condition and placed a garland made of slippers around her neck, an act intended to humiliate her. The incident reportedly occurred in front of several onlookers, some of whom later alerted authorities.
Following the complaint, police registered a case under relevant sections related to assault, outraging the modesty of a woman, and unlawful assembly. Two individuals have been taken into custody, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend others who may have been involved in the incident.
Officials said the victim was immediately provided medical assistance and counselling support. Her statement has been recorded, and further investigation is ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and the role of each accused person.
Police sources said the dispute is believed to have started over an alleged disagreement regarding entry into a local temple, although the exact trigger is still being verified. Authorities are also examining whether the incident had any prior planning or if it escalated spontaneously.
Senior police officials have condemned the act, calling it deeply shameful and unacceptable. They assured strict action against all those involved and said additional teams have been deployed to ensure no further tension arises in the locality.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents and social activists, who have demanded strong punishment for the accused and better protection for women in public spaces. Local community leaders have also appealed for calm, urging people not to spread rumours that could disturb peace in the area.
Meanwhile, police have increased security in sensitive parts of Ulhasnagar to prevent any escalation of tension. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are likely as evidence and witness statements are being examined.
The case has once again raised serious concerns about mob violence and the safety of women in situations involving local disputes.
