Greater Noida: A woman allegedly died by suicide after facing dowry harassment in Greater Noida, police said on Monday. Following the incident, her husband and father-in-law have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to officials, the incident came to light after the woman was found dead at her residence under suspicious circumstances. Preliminary investigations suggest that she had been under alleged mental and physical harassment related to dowry demands from her in-laws.
Police said a complaint was filed by the victim’s family, after which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act. Acting on the complaint and initial evidence, the husband and father-in-law were taken into custody for questioning and later arrested.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Officials added that forensic teams have also been called to examine the scene and collect additional evidence.
Family members of the deceased alleged that she had been facing continuous harassment since her marriage and had raised concerns multiple times. They further claimed that she was under severe emotional distress in the days leading up to the incident.
Police officials said statements from neighbours and relatives are being recorded as part of the ongoing investigation. Digital evidence, including mobile phone data and messages, is also being examined to establish the sequence of events.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over dowry-related harassment cases in parts of Uttar Pradesh, where such complaints continue to be reported despite strict legal provisions.
Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will be carried out and appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings of the post-mortem and forensic reports.
