A woman was allegedly murdered in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar after repeatedly rejecting the advances of a man, police said on Sunday. The accused later came under attack from an angry crowd and is currently in critical condition at a hospital.
According to police officials, the incident took place in a residential area where the accused allegedly confronted the woman after she refused to maintain contact with him. During the altercation, he reportedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, causing severe injuries. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed during treatment.
The attack triggered outrage among local residents, many of whom gathered at the scene shortly after the incident. Police said the accused was allegedly beaten by members of the crowd before officers reached the area and shifted him to a government hospital under heavy security. Doctors said his condition remains critical.
Investigators stated that the accused had allegedly been harassing the woman for some time and was upset over her continued rejection. Police have registered a murder case and are recording statements from witnesses and family members.
Senior officers appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands, warning that mob violence could complicate investigations and lead to further legal action. Authorities also confirmed that cases related to the mob assault may be examined separately after reviewing video footage and eyewitness accounts.
The incident has once again raised concerns over crimes against women linked to stalking, harassment and obsessive behaviour. Activists and local organisations demanded stronger preventive measures and quicker intervention in cases where women report repeated intimidation or threats.
Police presence has been increased in the locality to prevent further tension. Officials said counselling and support are being provided to the victim’s family while the investigation continues.
