Hypertension or commonly known as high blood pressure is a major health threat.

World Hypertension day observed on May 17, highlights the growing health crisis of hypertension in India. The Indian Hypertension Control Initiative aims to provide treatment services for over 220 million individuals suffering from high blood pressure.

On its part, The World Health Organization urges governments and healthcare professionals to focus on promoting healthy diets and physical activity.

In India, approximately 22.6% of adults suffer from hypertension, with higher rates in men and urban areas. Alarmingly, only 12% of those affected have their condition under control.

In the Crown of India the valley of  Kashmir, 19% of the population above 15 years has elevated blood pressure, with more women affected than men. The Kashmiri diet, which has shifted towards increased consumption of salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats, contributes to hypertension development.

We need to take multiple steps to tackle this.
To combat hypertension, individuals can adopt lifestyle modifications such as reducing salt intake, exercising regularly, and managing stress. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and potassium can help lower blood pressure. Regular physical activity, such as walking or cycling, can also reduce the risk of hypertension. Stress reduction techniques like meditation and yoga can be beneficial. Maintaining a healthy weight and limiting alcohol and tobacco consumption are also essential.

Early detection and management of hypertension are crucial to preventing complications. By promoting awareness and healthy lifestyles, India can work towards reducing the burden of hypertension. Empowering individuals with knowledge and tools to manage hypertension effectively is key to long-term health. On World Hypertension Day, let's emphasize the importance of monitoring blood pressure regularly and adopting healthy habits to prevent this silent killer.
