Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a sharp attack on the West Bengal government and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleging that the ruling party in the state has “oppressed Ram devotees” and “stopped Durga Puja celebrations” in certain areas.
Speaking at a political rally, Yogi Adityanath accused the TMC government of engaging in appeasement politics and targeting religious communities. He claimed that cultural and religious traditions associated with Hindu festivals were being restricted under the current administration in West Bengal.
Referring to incidents related to Ram Navami processions and Durga Puja arrangements, he alleged that permissions were denied or obstacles created in organizing religious events. He said such actions reflected a “discriminatory approach” towards Hindu festivals and devotees.
The remarks have intensified the political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the TMC, especially in the run-up to elections. The BJP has repeatedly accused the West Bengal government of mismanagement and bias, while the ruling party has rejected such allegations as politically motivated.
Yogi Adityanath further argued that festivals like Durga Puja are not just religious events but also an integral part of Bengal’s cultural identity. He said any attempt to restrict such celebrations would amount to an attack on the state’s traditions.
The statement is expected to trigger strong reactions from TMC leaders, who have in the past defended their administration’s handling of law and order during festivals, claiming that restrictions—where imposed—are for maintaining public safety and preventing communal tension.
West Bengal has often seen political debates around religious processions and festival permissions, with both major parties accusing each other of politicizing cultural events. Analysts note that such issues tend to become highly sensitive during election seasons, particularly in states with diverse religious and cultural practices.
As political temperatures rise, both the BJP and TMC are expected to escalate their campaigning narratives, with religion, culture, and governance emerging as key themes in the electoral battle.
No official response from the West Bengal government had been issued immediately following Yogi Adityanath’s remarks at the time of reporting.
