Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee has strongly criticized the BJP, describing himself as a victim of “political violence” and “state-sponsored terrorism” following an alleged attack on him in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. His remarks came a day after stones, eggs, and other objects were allegedly hurled at him during a visit to meet families affected by post-poll violence.
In a social media post, Banerjee thanked Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for expressing support after the incident. Referring to his participation in India's diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor, Banerjee said he had represented the country abroad against terrorism but now found himself a victim of political violence at home. He accused the BJP of targeting those who question the ruling party.
“Today, I stand as a victim of political violence and state-sponsored terrorism unleashed by those who claim to be the guardians of nationalism,” Banerjee said in his statement. He further asserted that he would continue fighting for democracy and constitutional values despite intimidation and threats.
The incident occurred during Banerjee's visit to Sonarpur, where he was meeting families allegedly affected by post-poll violence. According to the TMC leader, he sustained an injury near his eye after being hit by a brick and claimed that the attack was “BJP-sponsored.” He also alleged that security arrangements were inadequate at the time of the incident.
The BJP has rejected the allegations and claimed that the incident was linked to internal factional disputes within the Trinamool Congress rather than any attack orchestrated by its workers. BJP leaders accused the TMC of attempting to politicize the episode for political gain.
Meanwhile, police have arrested five people in connection with the assault and launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are examining video footage and eyewitness accounts to determine the sequence of events.
The controversy has further escalated political tensions in West Bengal, especially after another alleged attack on TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee in Hooghly. TMC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, have accused the BJP of fostering a climate of violence, while the BJP has continued to deny involvement in both incidents.
As investigations continue, the incidents have intensified the political confrontation between the TMC and BJP, with both parties trading allegations over responsibility for the violence.
