A senior AIADMK leader has launched a sharp attack on actor-turned-politician Vijay, saying he lacks the basic political experience and qualifications required to form or run a government, and warning that cinema popularity cannot be a substitute for governance ability.
Speaking to reporters in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK functionary said that while film personalities often enjoy strong public support, governing a state requires administrative understanding, organisational experience and knowledge of public policy. He added that “cinema fame alone cannot be the basis for leading a government.”
The remarks come amid growing political activity around Vijay, whose increasing public meetings and outreach programmes have sparked speculation about his future electoral plans. His recent gatherings have drawn large crowds, prompting debates within Tamil Nadu politics about whether a new political force is emerging ahead of the next state election.
The AIADMK leader argued that Tamil Nadu has a long history of film personalities entering politics, but success has always depended on strong organisational backing and experience in public life. He cited past examples where celebrity appeal alone was not sufficient to sustain long-term governance.
He also indirectly criticised what he described as “youth-driven emotional politics,” saying that governance cannot be based on popularity alone. According to him, issues such as economy, welfare delivery, law and order, and administration require trained leadership rather than mass appeal.
Meanwhile, supporters of Vijay have dismissed such criticism, arguing that he has been engaging with people directly and raising concerns about governance issues affecting the public. They say his growing presence reflects dissatisfaction among sections of voters and should not be underestimated.
Political observers note that Vijay’s entry into active politics has added a new dimension to Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, which is traditionally dominated by established Dravidian parties. His future strategy and possible alliance choices are being closely watched.
The AIADMK, on its part, appears to be sharpening its political messaging ahead of the next electoral cycle, as parties in the state begin positioning themselves for a competitive contest. The exchange highlights the early signs of a heated political battle in Tamil Nadu, with leadership credibility and experience emerging as key talking points.
