The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned the attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas, while firmly rejecting allegations that its workers were involved in the incident.
Reacting to the controversy, senior BJP leaders stated that violence has no place in democracy and that attacks on political opponents should not be justified under any circumstances. However, they also argued that the incident reflected growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal.
Speaking on the matter, BJP leaders said that while the party does not support any form of physical attack, "public anger has to show up somewhere," suggesting that frustration among people over various issues in the state may have contributed to the hostile reaction faced by Abhishek Banerjee during his visit. They maintained that the BJP had no organizational role in the episode and accused the TMC of attempting to politicize the incident for electoral gain.
The controversy erupted after Banerjee was allegedly targeted with stones, bricks, eggs and slippers while visiting the family of a deceased party worker in Sonarpur. The TMC described the incident as a pre-planned attack orchestrated by BJP supporters and claimed it was an attempt to intimidate one of the party's top leaders.
Several TMC leaders, including MP Mahua Moitra, accused the BJP of directly instigating the violence. Moitra claimed that video footage showed a BJP worker pelting stones at Banerjee and demanded strict action against those responsible.
The BJP, however, rejected these allegations and challenged the ruling party to present concrete evidence linking the attackers to the saffron camp. Party leaders argued that the growing resentment among sections of the public against the TMC government was being ignored and that the incident should not automatically be attributed to political conspiracy.
Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the attack and have detained several individuals for questioning. Authorities are examining video footage and eyewitness accounts to determine who was involved and whether the incident was spontaneous or organized.
The attack has triggered a fresh political war of words between the TMC and BJP, with both sides accusing each other of fostering a culture of violence in West Bengal. As the investigation continues, the incident has once again highlighted the deep political polarization that characterizes the state's political landscape.
