Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh has strongly criticized the BJP-led West Bengal government after an FIR was registered against former Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee over a speech she delivered earlier this year.
Reacting to the development, Ghosh alleged that the BJP is attempting to create an atmosphere of “fear and threat” in West Bengal by targeting opposition leaders through legal and administrative actions. According to him, the FIR is politically motivated and part of a broader effort to intimidate TMC leaders and supporters.
The controversy stems from a complaint filed by a Kolkata resident regarding remarks made by Banerjee during a political rally on March 9. The complainant alleged that the speech could provoke unrest and affect communal harmony. Based on the complaint, police registered an FIR under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to promoting enmity and provoking a breach of peace. The case was initially registered at Netaji Nagar Police Station before being transferred to Hare Street Police Station for further investigation.
TMC leaders have dismissed the allegations, maintaining that Banerjee’s remarks have been taken out of context. Ghosh argued that opposition figures are being selectively targeted while similar statements by BJP leaders often go unchallenged. He claimed that the current political environment is being shaped through “threat politics” and legal pressure rather than democratic debate.
The FIR against Banerjee comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections and a series of investigations involving senior TMC leaders. In recent days, party leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Kunal Ghosh, have also faced questioning and summons in separate cases, leading the TMC to accuse authorities of conducting a political vendetta.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders have defended the legal actions, arguing that complaints are being processed according to law and that no individual is above accountability. The party has rejected allegations of political targeting and maintains that due process is being followed.
The issue is expected to further intensify the political confrontation between the BJP and TMC as both sides continue to trade accusations over governance, law enforcement, and democratic freedoms in the state.
