The saffron party’s Central Election Committee named Bhojpuri actor-turned-politician Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’ and former Samajwadi Party (SP) MLC Ghanshyam Lodhi as its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-polls in Uttar Pradesh. Notably, the seats of Azamgarh and Rampur, which became vacant following the resignations of former Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Azam Khan, respectively, are considered Samajwadi Party strongholds.

The BJP has announced Chief Minister Manik Saha’s nomination for the Town Bordowali assembly by-election in Tripura. It is worth noting that Manik Saha took the oath as the 11th Chief Minister of Tripura on May 15, after the BJP asked former Chief Minister Biplab Deb to resign.

The deadline for filing nominations is June 6, the deadline for scrutiny is the following day, and the deadline for withdrawal of nominations is June 9.

On June 26, the votes will be counted.

The byelections were called following the resignations of three BJP MLAs and the death of CPI-M legislator Ramendra Chandra Debnath.

Three MLAs, Roy Barman (Agartala), Ashish Kumar Saha (Town Bordowali), and Ashis Das (Surma), quit the BJP and the Assembly amid open resentment of then-CM Deb.

Former BJP ministers Roy Barman and Saha joined the Congress in February this year, while Das joined the Trinamool Congress last year.

Debnath was elected six times from the Jubarajnagar constituency and served as Assembly speaker on several occasions.

He died on February 2 in Kolkata from kidney failure.
