BJP Leadership Holds Crucial Deliberations on Organisational Overhaul, National and State Appointments Imminent

In recent days, the top brass of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been engaged in a series of high-level, late-night strategy sessions concerning key organisational decisions. A pivotal meeting took place on Wednesday at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP’s National General Secretary (Organisation), BL Santosh.

Discussions prominently featured the forthcoming election for the BJP's National President, with sources indicating that an official announcement could come within a week. Alongside national leadership deliberations, the meeting addressed significant state-level reorganisations. Names of potential new state presidents for Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh were evaluated, with announcements expected in the next few days.

The anticipated reshuffle is set to play a vital role in shaping the BJP’s electoral blueprint ahead of upcoming polls. The election process for the party’s new national president may commence post-April 20. While the party searches for a capable successor to JP Nadda, speculation surrounds K. Annamalai, who is being considered for a prominent national role—if not as president, possibly as a national office bearer.

Spotlight on Uttar Pradesh Leadership

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is reportedly contemplating a change in state leadership, seeking an OBC or Dalit face to counter the caste-based narrative being advanced by the opposition. With CM Yogi Adityanath representing the upper caste Thakur community, the party is looking for a socially balanced replacement for current state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, a Jat leader.

Eastern Uttar Pradesh, where the BJP underperformed in the last Lok Sabha polls, is under particular consideration. The party aims to strike a balance between caste representation and regional dynamics, especially with an eye on the 2027 assembly elections.

With 70 of 98 district and city unit chiefs already appointed—a prerequisite for electing a new state chief—the party is poised to finalise the UP leadership. Potential candidates include state minister Dharmpal Singh, Union MoS B L Verma, Rajya Sabha MP Baburam Nishad, and former MPs such as Ram Shankar Katheria, Vinod Sonkar, Neelam Sonkar, and ex-MLC Vidya Sagar Sonkar.
