The political war of words between the BJP and Congress intensified on Thursday after BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the funding of his foreign visits. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Patra alleged that Rahul Gandhi had declared an income of around Rs 11 crore while reportedly spending nearly Rs 60 crore on 54 foreign trips over the years.
Patra demanded that the Congress MP explain the source of funding for these overseas visits, claiming that the expenditure appeared disproportionate to his declared income. The BJP leader said the public deserved transparency from a senior opposition figure who frequently targets the Centre on issues of accountability and corruption.
According to Patra, Rahul Gandhi’s travel records and related financial details raise “serious questions” regarding how such expensive international travel was financed. He further alleged that several of these visits were made during crucial political developments in India, accusing the Congress leader of remaining absent during important parliamentary and national discussions.
The BJP spokesperson also claimed that Congress has failed to provide clear answers whenever questions are raised about Rahul Gandhi’s foreign travel or financial matters. He urged the party leadership to disclose complete details of expenses, sponsorships, and accompanying delegations related to the visits.
Meanwhile, the Congress party dismissed the BJP’s allegations as politically motivated. Congress leaders accused the ruling party of attempting to divert attention from issues such as inflation, unemployment, and governance challenges. Party representatives argued that Rahul Gandhi, as a public figure and Member of Parliament, has every right to travel abroad for lectures, meetings, academic events, and interactions with the Indian diaspora.
Congress leaders further alleged that the BJP routinely targets opposition voices through personal attacks instead of engaging in meaningful political debate. They maintained that all financial declarations made by Rahul Gandhi are in accordance with legal requirements and election norms.
The latest controversy comes amid heightened political tensions between the BJP and Congress ahead of several key electoral battles across the country. Both parties have intensified their attacks on each other over issues ranging from governance and corruption to transparency and political accountability.
