A fresh political debate has emerged within the opposition camp after Congress MP Manickam Tagore publicly defended Mamata Banerjee following the attack on TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, West Bengal.
Reacting to the incident, Tagore said that when an alliance partner faces a difficult situation, allies should stand together rather than distance themselves. In a statement that quickly drew political attention, he remarked, “When an alliance partner faces a storm, we don't step aside.” The comment was widely seen as a show of solidarity with Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress amid their allegations that BJP workers were behind the attack on Abhishek Banerjee.
Political observers also interpreted the statement as a veiled criticism of M. K. Stalin and the DMK leadership. Tagore has previously expressed dissatisfaction over the Congress-DMK relationship in Tamil Nadu, particularly regarding power-sharing and the treatment of Congress workers within the alliance. Earlier this year, he had openly stated that Congress workers were “humans, not robots” while urging the DMK to show greater respect to its ally.
The latest remarks come at a time when opposition unity under the INDIA bloc continues to face challenges across several states. While Congress leaders have largely backed Mamata Banerjee over the Sonarpur incident, differences among regional allies have increasingly surfaced after recent electoral developments and alliance negotiations.
The controversy began after Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked with stones, bricks and eggs while visiting violence-affected families in South 24 Parganas. The Trinamool Congress termed the incident a politically motivated attack and accused the BJP of orchestrating it. BJP leaders, however, denied involvement and claimed the incident reflected public anger against the ruling party in West Bengal.
Tagore’s statement has now added a broader political dimension to the controversy, with discussions shifting beyond Bengal and focusing on the future of opposition alliances. His remarks are being viewed not only as support for Mamata Banerjee but also as a message on how alliance partners should behave during moments of political crisis.
