Congress Signs Up For Mamata Banerjee's Opposition Meet

The Congress would be represented in themeeting convened by the Trinamool Congress leader by senior politicians Mallikarjuna Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, and Randeep Singh Surjewala, according to reports.

In terms of the likely consensus so far, there have been signs that Sharad Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party is one of thepotential contenders.

Mr Pawar, on the other hand, has informed his party that he will not be running, according to NDTV sources.

He plans to attend the opposition meetingon Wednesday.Ms Banerjee had written to opposition leaders on Saturday, inviting them to the meeting.

The term of President Ram Nath Kovind expires on July 24.

Elections for the next President of India will take place on July 18, with counting taking place three days later if necessary.

The current coalition, led by the BJP, lacks the necessary numbers for a certain victory.

In 2017, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) received support from K Chandrashekhar Rao's Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Jagan Reddy's YSR Congress, and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's BJD in support of Ramnath Kovind against the Congress-led opposition's nominee Meira Kumar.

This time, Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao, or KCR, is helping to bring together opposition forces to fight the BJP together.

The polls are based on votes cast by MLAs and MPs in an electoral college.  The value of each MLA's vote is determined by the state's population and the number of assembly seats.

As a result, the electoral college has a total strength of 10,86,431.  A candidate who receives more than 50% of the vote wins. The NDA is down 13,000 votes.

Mr Kharge was apparently assigned with this mission by Congress President Sonia Gandhi before Ms Banerjee launched her push for opposition unity ahead of the presidential elections.

There were concerns about the opposition's cohesion after Ms Banerjee wrote the letter on Saturday.

According to reports, the Trinamool has reached out to the Congress, which will send Mr Kharge and two other politicians to Ms Banerjee's meeting.

The Congress and Mamata Banerjee have had a long history of ups and downs, dating back to when she left the party to form her own 25 years ago.

Mamata Banerjee's national ambitions were made clear after she won West Bengal again in a tense election with the BJP last year.

According to a December article in the mouthpiece of the Trinamool Congress, Jago Bangla, the Congress had gone into a "deep freeze" and resistance had increased.
