Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of undermining democratic norms after the recent electoral outcome in the state. His remarks came amid growing political tension in West Bengal following the results that have triggered debates over leadership continuity and governance.
Speaking to reporters, Pradhan alleged that democracy in West Bengal is “being held at gunpoint,” claiming that the mandate of the people is not being respected in its true spirit. He further criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership for what he described as an unwillingness to accept political defeat gracefully.
Pradhan specifically questioned Mamata Banerjee’s continuation in office despite what he termed a clear setback for her party in the latest political developments. According to him, in a healthy democracy, electoral outcomes should lead to accountability and change in leadership where required.
“The people have given their verdict, but instead of respecting it, the ruling dispensation is clinging to power. This is not in line with democratic traditions,” Pradhan said, intensifying the BJP’s criticism of the state government.
The remarks come at a time when West Bengal’s political environment remains highly charged, with both the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP engaged in a war of words over governance, law and order, and post-election developments. The BJP leadership has been consistently alleging administrative bias and political violence in the state, charges that the TMC has repeatedly denied.
Pradhan also hinted that the Centre is closely monitoring the situation in West Bengal. He asserted that constitutional institutions must function freely and without pressure, adding that any attempt to weaken democratic processes would not be acceptable.
On the other hand, TMC leaders are likely to dismiss these allegations as politically motivated, arguing that the opposition is attempting to destabilise the elected state government by spreading misinformation.
The exchange of sharp political statements highlights the continuing friction between the ruling party in West Bengal and the central leadership of the BJP. As the situation develops, further political reactions are expected from both sides in the coming days.
