Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien on Wednesday challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he should resign if the Bharatiya Janata Party fails to win the West Bengal elections.
Derek OBrien made the remarks while reacting to ongoing political campaigning and intense exchanges between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the state. He said that the BJP has made several strong claims about winning in West Bengal, and therefore should be accountable if those predictions do not come true.
O’Brien also criticised what he called exaggerated election rhetoric from the BJP leadership, arguing that ground realities in West Bengal do not match the party’s public statements. He claimed that voters in the state continue to support the ruling Trinamool Congress in significant numbers.
The comments come amid a highly charged election atmosphere in West Bengal, where leaders from both parties are making competing claims about voter sentiment and likely outcomes. The BJP has repeatedly asserted that it is expanding its support base in the state, while the Trinamool Congress maintains confidence in retaining power.
The BJP has not yet officially responded to O’Brien’s resignation challenge, but party leaders have previously dismissed similar remarks from opposition figures as political theatrics.
West Bengal remains one of the most closely watched states in the current election cycle, with both national and regional parties campaigning aggressively and focusing on issues such as development, law and order, and welfare schemes.
As polling progresses, political rhetoric continues to intensify, reflecting the high stakes of the contest and the significance of the state in national politics.
