At the party's general council meeting held on Sunday, M K Stalin, a DMK stalwart and the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, was unanimously elected to serve as party president. The DMK declared Stalin to be elected unopposed to the top party position during the meeting of the newly formed general council. Duraimurugan and T R Baalu were unanimously elected to serve as general secretary and treasurer, respectively. All three of the current leaders have been re-elected to their posts.

When the Chief Minister arrived at the venue of the general council meeting, party members welcomed him excitedly.

Following elections for party positions, at various levels, the DMK's president, general secretary, and treasurer were elected as part of the 15th organisational polls.

The 69-year-old top leader, who is the younger son of late party patriarch M Karunanidhi, has held a number of positions inside the party, including those of DMK treasurer and youth wing secretary.

After Karunanidhi's death in 2018, Stalin was unanimously selected to lead the party as DMK's second president.

In 1969, Karunanidhi was elected as the DMK's first president, marking the establishment of the position in the party.

C N Annadurai, the founder of the DMK and an icon of the Dravidian movement, held the position of party general secretary until his death in 1969.

The DMK was established in 1949.
