The Election Commission of India (ECI) has dismissed allegations made by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the alleged “opening of ballot boxes” in a West Bengal constituency, calling the claims baseless and misleading. The development has further intensified the political confrontation between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run-up to the counting of votes.
According to election officials, the accusations relate to routine procedures involving the handling of election materials after polling. The ECI clarified that no ballot boxes or Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were opened unlawfully and that all processes were carried out strictly under established guidelines, in the presence of authorized personnel and security forces.
The controversy erupted after TMC leaders alleged that ballot boxes had been tampered with in a constituency, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. The ruling party demanded immediate clarification from the ECI and called for stricter monitoring of strong rooms where EVMs are stored. TMC leaders also urged their party workers to remain vigilant and guard the strong rooms until counting day.
In response, the ECI issued a statement rejecting the claims and emphasized that the election process remains secure. Officials explained that what was being portrayed as “opening” of ballot boxes was actually part of a standard protocol, such as checking seals or handling documents, conducted in a controlled environment with representatives of political parties present.
The BJP, meanwhile, accused the TMC of attempting to create confusion and mistrust among voters. Party leaders said the allegations were a tactic to discredit the election process in anticipation of unfavorable results. They maintained that the ECI has put in place robust safeguards to ensure transparency and fairness.
The exchange of accusations comes at a time when political tensions are running high across West Bengal. Several constituencies have reported heightened security around strong rooms, with central forces deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.
Observers note that such disputes are not uncommon in closely contested elections, especially in a politically charged state like West Bengal. However, the ECI has reiterated that all necessary measures, including CCTV surveillance, round-the-clock security, and the presence of party representatives, are in place to safeguard the sanctity of the vote.
With counting day approaching, authorities have appealed to all political parties to maintain calm and trust the institutional mechanisms designed to ensure a free and fair election.
