ECI to Announce Delhi Assembly Election Schedule Today

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. A press conference will be held at 2:00 PM today at the Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 62 out of the 70 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured eight.

Meanwhile, AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal has alleged large-scale irregularities in voter additions and deletions in the New Delhi Assembly seat. In a post on X, Kejriwal highlighted a letter sent by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). "Large-scale fraud taking place in voter additions and deletions in the New Delhi assembly. Delhi CM Atishi ji writes this letter to CEC presenting evidence and seeking time to meet," Kejriwal wrote.

In her letter, CM Atishi raised concerns about a surge in voter addition and deletion applications. She stated, "I am writing to urgently draw your attention towards a significant surge in voter addition and deletion applications in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency over the past few days."

She detailed that between October 29, 2024, and January 2, 2025, 13,276 Form-6 applications were received, along with 6,166 Form-7 applications for deletions. "Total no of votes, as per draft electoral rolls published after summary revision on 29 October 2024, is 1,06,873. Number of votes sought to be deleted is 6,166, which is 5.77 percent of total votes," Atishi noted.

As per election rules, if deletions exceed 2 percent of total votes, the Election Registration Officer (ERO) is required to personally verify each deletion request, Atishi highlighted.

In response, BJP Delhi President Virendraa Sachdeva accused AAP leaders Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh of threatening election officials. "Action should be taken against AAP leaders for intimidating election officers," Sachdeva said. He also alleged that CM Atishi, Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh, and Raghav Chadha were involved in a "conspiracy to murder democracy."
