A political controversy erupted in Kolkata after an egg was hurled at TMC MLA and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh while he was speaking to the media outside the residence of TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in Kalighat on Monday evening. The incident occurred shortly after Ghosh emerged from a meeting with senior party leaders.
According to TMC leaders present at the scene, an egg struck Ghosh from behind as he was addressing reporters. Senior TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters were behind the attack and accused the police of failing to act promptly despite being present near the venue. He claimed repeated calls had to be made to senior police officials after the incident.
Ghosh also expressed concern over security around Mamata Banerjee’s residence and questioned how the alleged attacker was able to approach the area. He further alleged that the individual involved had links to a previous CID operation near Banerjee’s residence and demanded immediate arrests.
A youth identifying himself as Chandan reportedly claimed responsibility for the act, saying he was protesting against Ghosh. However, he did not elaborate on the reasons behind his grievance.
The BJP rejected the allegations, with party leaders dismissing TMC's claims as politically motivated. BJP leaders argued that the incident reflected public anger against the Trinamool Congress rather than any organized political conspiracy.
Police confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident and said an investigation has been launched to identify all those involved and determine the circumstances surrounding the egg-throwing episode.
The incident has further intensified political tensions in West Bengal, with both the TMC and BJP trading accusations over law and order and political conduct in the state.
