Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan Handed 14-Year Sentence in Corruption Case

Ex-Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced for 14 years in jail on Friday. His wife Bushra Bibi has been given a 7-year jail sentence in the same case.

There are almost 200 charges under his name. However, his party PTI claims that the latest conviction is just a move to keep him silent.

"I will neither make any deal nor seek any relief," Khan said in the court room after his conviction.

The anti-graft court was held in the jail near Islamabad where Khan is being held & convicted him along with his wife over their joint welfare trust Al-Qadir Trust.

"The prosecution has proven its case. Khan is convicted," said Judge Nasir Javed Rana as he sentenced Khan to 14 years and Bibi to 7 years.

Faith healer Bibi who was recently released on bail was arrested at the court after the conviction, her spokeswoman Mashal Yousafzai.

Khan claims the cases are political and to keep him from coming back to power.

The sentence was delayed several times in the last month & analysts say the jail term is to pressure Khan to make a deal with the military to step back from politics.

Khan has been convicted four times, two of which were overturned and two of which had the sentence suspended. But he is still in prison on other cases.

A UN panel of experts found last year that Khan’s detention had no legal basis and was to disqualify him from contesting elections.

Khan was not allowed to contest in February’s election and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party was crippled by a massive crackdown.

PTI got more seats than any other party but a coalition of parties which are considered more obedient to the military establishment denied them the power.
