Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MP Jagannath Sarkar has alleged that party workers were attacked during the ongoing second phase of polling in West Bengal, claiming that “gundagardi” (lawlessness) is taking place with the support of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Speaking to reporters during the day, Sarkar said that a BJP booth agent was allegedly targeted in one of the constituencies going to polls, and accused ruling party supporters of trying to intimidate opposition workers. He claimed that such incidents are aimed at influencing voters and creating fear in polling areas.
“Gundagardi is happening with the help of TMC,” Sarkar alleged, adding that the situation was not conducive to free and fair voting in certain pockets. He demanded immediate intervention from the Election Commission and stricter action against those responsible.
The allegations come amid the second phase of polling in West Bengal, where voting began early in the morning under tight security arrangements. Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed across sensitive booths, and election authorities have been closely monitoring the process through webcasting and field reports.
The Election Commission has not yet issued a detailed response to Sarkar’s specific allegations, but officials have repeatedly stated that they are maintaining strict vigilance to ensure peaceful polling. Security forces have been instructed to act promptly in case of any reported disturbance or violation of electoral norms.
Meanwhile, the ruling TMC has consistently rejected similar allegations made by opposition leaders, arguing that the elections are being conducted peacefully in most areas and accusing the BJP of making “baseless claims” to influence public perception.
West Bengal has witnessed a highly charged political atmosphere during the current election phase, with repeated accusations and counter-accusations between major parties. While several constituencies have reported smooth voting, isolated complaints of tension and confrontation have surfaced from different districts.
As polling continues, authorities have urged all political parties to maintain calm and cooperate with election officials. The final voter turnout and detailed incident reports are expected after the completion of voting in this phase.
