New Delhi: Senior lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that the government has followed a policy of “badla” (revenge) instead of “badlav” (change) at every stage of its governance.
Speaking at a political event and later addressing the media, Sibal said that the central government’s approach over the years has been marked by retaliation against political opponents rather than constructive reform or inclusive development. He argued that this style of politics has deepened divisions in the country.
Sibal claimed that institutions and investigative agencies have increasingly been used in a “selective manner” against opposition leaders. While he did not provide specific new cases in his remarks, he said that there is a “pattern” that raises concerns about fairness and democratic functioning.
The senior leader further said that India’s democratic framework requires dialogue and consensus, but the present political environment is becoming “confrontational and polarised.” He added that the idea of “badlav,” which translates to transformation or positive change, should be the guiding principle of governance instead of “badla.”
Responding to such criticism in the past, the ruling party has consistently rejected allegations of bias, stating that all actions taken by investigative agencies are based on law and due process. BJP leaders have often described such remarks by opposition figures as politically motivated.
Political observers note that Sibal, who has frequently voiced criticism of the government in recent years, continues to be one of the prominent voices questioning the Centre’s policies on institutional independence and civil liberties.
The comments come at a time when opposition parties are increasingly attempting to sharpen their narrative against the ruling establishment ahead of upcoming political battles. Leaders across parties have been focusing on issues such as democracy, unemployment, and institutional accountability.
As the political exchange intensifies, Sibal’s remarks are expected to further fuel debate between the ruling party and the opposition over governance style and democratic values in India.
