Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee after he was allegedly attacked during a political confrontation in Hooghly district. The meeting took place shortly after the MP returned to Kolkata following the incident, which has intensified the political clash between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to TMC leaders, Kalyan Banerjee was allegedly assaulted by BJP supporters during a political programme in Hooghly. The party claimed that the MP sustained injuries during the confrontation and accused BJP workers of deliberately targeting him. Photographs and videos from the scene circulated on social media, prompting strong reactions from TMC leaders.
Mamata Banerjee expressed concern over the incident and enquired about the MP's health during the meeting. Senior TMC leaders also condemned the alleged attack, describing it as an attempt to intimidate opposition voices. The Chief Minister reportedly assured Banerjee of full support from the party and called for appropriate action against those responsible.
The BJP, however, rejected the allegations and accused TMC workers of provoking the confrontation. Party leaders claimed that the ruling party was trying to politicize the incident and divert attention from local issues. BJP representatives maintained that their workers were not responsible for the violence and demanded an impartial investigation.
Following the incident, police initiated an inquiry and began collecting evidence, including video footage and eyewitness accounts. Security was also strengthened in the area to prevent any further escalation of tensions between supporters of the two parties.
The alleged attack has triggered a fresh political war of words in West Bengal, with both TMC and BJP blaming each other for the violence. Leaders from both camps have exchanged accusations, highlighting the intense rivalry that continues to characterize the state's political landscape.
Political observers note that clashes between rival party workers have frequently occurred in several districts of West Bengal, particularly ahead of major elections and political campaigns. The latest incident in Hooghly is expected to further fuel the ongoing confrontation between the state's ruling party and the opposition BJP.
As the investigation continues, all eyes will be on the findings of law enforcement agencies and the political response from both parties in the coming days. The incident has once again brought concerns over political violence and public safety to the forefront of West Bengal's political discourse.
